Your First Trimester: What to Expect
Finding out you’re pregnant is a moment you never forget. Whether you’ve been dreaming about this for years or it came as a complete surprise, the first trimester is full of change, emotion, and yes — a lot of questions.
At Novel OBGYN in Coral Gables, Florida, Lorena Tinoco, MD, Madelyn Gonzalez, MD, and our entire obstetrics team have the privilege of sharing that moment with patients every day, and we never take it for granted. If you’re newly pregnant, we want you to know this right away: You don’t have to figure out what comes next on your own.
The first trimester can feel overwhelming, unpredictable, and even a little intimidating, but it’s also the beginning of something truly special. Our goal is to guide you through these early weeks with expert care, clear communication, and genuine support, so you feel informed, confident, and cared for from the very start.
What is the first trimester?
The first trimester spans from conception up to about 13 weeks of pregnancy. During this time, your body is incredibly busy as it begins preparing the perfect environment for your baby’s growth.
Your baby’s organs and systems begin forming, and your own body adjusts to support this precious new life. On the calendar, this period may seem short, but it’s filled with rapid changes — some you feel and some you don’t. That’s why prenatal care and support are so important.
Some common physical changes you can experience include:
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Tender breasts
- Increased urination
- Mood swings
- Food aversions or cravings
These changes can feel overwhelming, but most of them settle down or dissipate as you move into the second trimester.
Your first prenatal visit
Once you get a positive pregnancy test, it’s time to call us and schedule your first prenatal appointment. Ideally, that happens around 7-8 weeks, though timing can vary based on your health history and medical needs.
At your first visit, we:
- Confirm your pregnancy
- Estimate your due date
- Review your medical history and lifestyle
- Perform routine labs and discuss screening options
We recommend coming in with a list of questions, because this appointment lays the groundwork for the rest of your pregnancy care.
What you can do now
Taking good care of yourself is so important for your health and your baby’s. Your day-to-day habits help create the healthiest environment for your baby.
Here’s a snapshot of helpful habits to incorporate early on:
- Take a prenatal vitamin with folic acid daily
- Stay hydrated and eat balanced meals
- Rest when you’re tired (growing a baby is hard work!)
- Keep up with gentle movement (like walking) unless your doctor advises otherwise
And while it may go without saying, avoid alcohol, tobacco, and drugs because these can affect development during this critical early period.
When to seek medical attention promptly
While you’re pregnant, some symptoms are expected, but others necessitate a call to us right away:
- Heavy bleeding
- Severe pelvic pain
- Fainting or dizziness
- Severe, persistent nausea or vomiting
- Fever
- Signs of infection
We’re always here to support you, whether it’s a quick question or something that’s worrying you. Early reassurance can make all the difference.
Your first trimester is a time of beginnings. We’re honored to be part of your journey and to help you navigate every step with extreme care. We also offer self-paid obstetrical packages if you prefer not to use insurance.
If you haven’t already, schedule your first prenatal visit with us at Novel OBGYN by calling 305-477-5084. We can’t wait to meet you!
